originally built as a merchant’s house, 17 market place boasts a fascinating history In 1848, it briefly served as the Sole Bay Academy, founded by Henry Knevett Bransby, who sought to offer an exclusive education to young gentlemen. The ambitious curriculum included subjects such as Greek and Latin, navigation, and music, though the academy closed in 1851 after Bransby was declared bankrupt. The building then operated as a bank for much of the 20th century, with residential units added to the upper floors, offering separate access since the 1970s.
