Positive: The location is great, lots of vibrant eateries close by, and a quick walk to the train station. We liked the entrance, cute cafe and communal area. I also like the fact that it has a traditional Japanese bathtub although we didn’t have time to use it ourselves. Robes were a really nice touch and something that we didn’t get at every guest house we stayed at in Japan.

Negative: Our room although clean and well presented traditional Japanese style which is what we were hoping for, let us down because of the odour of damp. At first we thought it was a strong feet smell but then we noticed the shower severely leaking close to the room, and put two and two together and realised that there was a damp problem with the rooms on that side of the building. We also noticed the staff were running dehumidifiers in those areas of the building 24/7. Then, when we went to the staff to let them know about the smell and asked to switch to a different room, the man we spoke to said that was just what tatami smells like. This did not seem right at all, as we were of the understanding tatami has a nice straw like smell, not like smelly feet at all. After pushing a bit more he agreed to move us to a different room, which quite unsurprisingly smelt absolutely fine. This guesthouse has all the potential to be an amazing stay, but they need to get on top of this damp issue and quickly before more customers are put off like we were.
