Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: This is a very traditional hotel so if you're not Japanese, don't stay here unless you're prepared to conform to the traditions and at least learn a little bit of basic Japanese when speaking to staff. The hotel itself had amazing spa facilities that we made use of throughout our stay with no trouble at all. Experiencing an authentic onsen is certainly not for everyone but we really enjoyed it at this hotel.

Negative: There was no option to book Dinner or Breakfast via booking.com. We attempted to book this a week before our stay but unfortunately the restaurant was fully booked for our first two nights and the prices offered for booking dinner on the final night (as they had space in the restaurant) was very expensive. Fortunately the hotel receptionist on our first night offered to book us a table at a restaurant in Shimoda as well as book us a taxi there. The local train runs until around 10pm so eating out in the town was fairly straightforward each evening.

Summary: We were absolutely delighted with the level of service. Particularly from Katsumata!
