this is a a great location to experience the real vibe of authentic kona, hawaii My place is ideal for a single or couple who want a nicely located spot near the beach that's still in the West side tropical zone... but seek a setting well away from the retail, heat, tourists and bustle of Kailua town.
the area
our own secluded, uncrowded, black-pebble beach and bay and nearby black-sand beach offers easy access to outstanding snorkeling, kayaking, diving, fishing and swimming The north finger reef is home to wonderful snorkeling. Dramatic pinnacles dotted with coralheads teem with colorful tropical reef fish and other creatures. Unlike beaches in town, it's very uncrowded here most days and you will probably have the whole beach to yourself. :) The beach is about two minutes' drive away via a crazy steep road. You can walk it-- but driving is recommended. There are no streetlights, no highway noise and no chickens.
the room
cozy, comfortable room outfitted with the basics to ensure an easygoing, pleasant stay Raintank catchment household water system. (Drinking water provided.) Summer conditions may be warm at times, but like most homes in rural Hawaii, we count on ocean breezes for cooling--We do *not* have AC. There are box fans and one overhead fan available.
guest fit Best for quiet, self-sufficient, adventurous guests who desire a peaceful, rural location. This is a studio, so two guests max. I can accept one adult; two adults; or one adult and one older child (over 10 only!) Prefer vaccinated guests. Best for light meal prep.
the neighborhood
please note: this is a setting quite off the beaten track, so if you are looking to walk to nightlife, convenience stores or starbux, this location is not the place If you want to see canopies of stars, hear birds and whales and the crashing surf, and be near premier, uncrowded snorkeling and secluded beaches, well, that's more like us. Most guests love our rural location for just these reasons. At night, it's peaceful, quiet, dark and simply gorgeous out here. No highway noise. In the daytime, you may hear typical neighborhood sounds--neighbors living their lives, working on yards and homes; kids playing or dogs occasionally barking. In the early evenings, you may hear symphonies of chirping frogs in the distance. On a clear day, the view will take your breath away.
the south kona district
our quiet subdivision is stair-stepped onto dramatic, steep slopes, creating commanding, 180-degree panoramic ocean views This affords us vistas all the way to Kailua town 25 miles to the north and at least 10 miles to the south. Clear horizon lines run 45 miles straight out to sea. Sunsets are extraordinary experiences on this part of the island, especially at our location and elevation, you feel like you are on top of the world --yet still close to the beach. Our leeward (Kona means "lee" or calm) side of the island is characterized by mostly dry, sunny weather year round, with increased rain and humidity in the summer months. The weather is variable and some afternoons can be rainy. (This is what keeps our island green!) Because we are at elevation on a mountain slope, evenings in winter can sometimes be chilly even when sunny, warm days prevail.
in winter, we can hear the raucous humpback whales from up here (november through april) Star-swept skies astonish. Cool elevation of about 750 feet means that ocean breezes keep us naturally comfortable all day, every day.
the beach and bay
summer conditions are calm and placid, ideal for snorkeling Winter ocean conditions can be rough at times, interspersed with many calm days. Always use caution and common sense.
the beach right below us is a sweet pebble beach cove and bay Snorkeling along the finger reefs here (in calm conditions) is very good. Our beach is a TRUE best-kept secret. Shore divers love this area, also known for its abundant sealife, startling pinnacles and breathtaking coral gardens. (The dive charters often park just to the north of our bay.) Kayaking is premier and it's relatively easy to launch (in calm conditions).
hike along the ancient ala kahakai hawaiian trail to the south or walk a bit farther north and reach a gorgeous, secluded black sand beach fringed by coco palms
amenities & extras
free, reliable and fast wi-fi Furniture includes organic king size platform bed from Nest Bedding, end tables, table and chairs, sitting chairs and lamps, two dropleaf tables, two armoires for storage. Several lamps. Small dresser. Futon couch. Brand new 32-inch Roku TV with hundreds of free movies, TV shows and news shows. (No cable TV available.) If you like DVDs, there's also a 19-inch flat screen/DVD player with a few good movies and a few B or C movies. (Just ask, I have it in the closet.) I have just added a CD player/FM radio combo with bluetooth capability, plus a fantastic selection of Hawaiian music CDs to get you in the spirit of the Islands. There's also a classical acoustic guitar available to borrow free if you are a musician. If you can play well, come outside and serenade us! If you can't, please stay inside.. (joking!) New blackout blinds for privacy.

local driving distances
we are approx 23 miles south of Kailua-Kona, about an hour south of the airport. With the new bypass open, we are about 30 minutes to Keauhou Bay.
heading north: we are 15 minutes south of pu'uhonua o honaunau national historical park (the best preserved cultural refuge and ancient temple complex in the state) and honaunau bay featuring outstanding snorkeling Twenty minutes from world- famous Kealakekua Bay--a pristine bay and protected marine reserve/underwater park great for swimming, dolphin sightings and whale-watching. Ten minutes to beautiful, sandy Hookena Beach where you can rent a kayak. Five minutes to the famed coffee belt of the Honaunau Valley.
it's about 12 miles north to the town of captain cook, with services such as gasoline, restaurants, grocery and banking It's 45 minutes to Kailua if you DO want some nightlife, dining, bigbox retailers, sportfishing, golf, luaus or tennis.
heading south: we are about one hour and 25 minutes to the phenomenal hawaii volcanoes national park with (currently) one live summit eruption Punalu'u Black Sand beach, with an abundance of sunbathing turtles, is about 45 minutes south as are turnoffs for the Green Sands Beach and South Point.
covid: we do our best to sanitize the room between guests but also we expect guests to take personal accountability for their health Suggest you bring all you need to feel safe. We are fully vaccinated and prefer vaccinated guests. We expect our guests to adhere to any mask or other guidelines mandated by county ordinance.
renting a car for mobility and convenience sake is mandatory
in closing: let's make sure it's a fit We are best for self-sufficient guests who are quiet, courteous and respectful and who desire a peaceful, rural location. I find that independent, adventurous guests make the best fit. Do read the listing completely and house rules carefully BEFORE BOOKING to make sure it's a fit for you. ask questions!
holiday restrictions: one week minimum for christmas week (dec 19 - dec 26) and one week minimum for new year's week (dec 27 - Jan 4). You may book both weeks but I don't allow guests to break up the weeks.
disclaimers: this is a family neighborhood and there may be noise during the day that is out of our control Please be aware that while we take every precaution to prevent typical tropical insects from entering the room, one or two might make it inside as they do in all homes in Hawaii. They are harmless and easy to remove. Just let us know immediately and we'll take care of any unwanted visitors. There will be no refunds for the appearance of indigenous bugs. Keep doors closed to discourage mosquitos. Also: Geckos are a normal part of life in Hawaii and you may seem them inside. They are very curious and completely harmless.
we highly suggest our guests protect their trips by purchasing travel insurance I do not give refunds for any personal, health-related, weather-related or volcano-related reason. I do not allow confirmed stays to alter the number of days to a reduced amount.
